Belleville buses taking measures to improve safety
Belleville Transit is working with Dican Digital Instruments Canada to install Mobileye Shield+ as a test on two of their conventional Transit buses.
Mobileye Shield+ is a collision avoidance technology that provides notification to the driver of any pedestrians or cyclists that may enter a vehicle’s blind spot. Mobileye Shield+ is specially designed to address transit bus blind spots and A-pillar obstructions, improving driver visibility and safety in urban environments. Transit buses are long, have a large turning radius and in certain situations have reduced visibility.
Over just a five-year period, national statistics report that transit buses were responsible for over 65,000 injuries; the majority of which could have been avoided.
Mobileye Shield+ utilizes four multi-vision smart sensors, strategically placed around the bus to watch for pedestrians and cyclists that can become hidden in an A-pillar blind spot and also in the front, on the left, and right sides. Shield+ leverages dynamic detection angles to constantly monitor the driving environment and provide real-time visual and audible alerts when pedestrians or cyclists are in the bus danger zones. The system is capable of differentiating pedestrians and cyclists from inanimate objects.
“By installing Mobileye Shield+ as a test in two of our buses, Belleville Transit is taking the opportunity to increase the safety of the public and our drivers,” states Paul Buck, Manager Transit Services. “This is an important step forward in providing our drivers with technology to enable greater collision avoidance.”
Belleville Transit plans to operate the two test units for up to one year, and if they prove to be beneficial, will add this technology as standard equipment on all future vehicle purchases.
